The Business Case for Fitness

The importance of exercise for human well-being is well established. A sedentary lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers.

Physical fitness, on the other hand, is associated with reductions in mortality and delayed disability. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Sports Medicine advise adults to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most every day. The recent US Surgeon General’s report emphasizes the health benefits of regular exercise.

Many studies disclose the benefits for companies that provide work-place exercise programs. These include a reduction of health care and insurance costs, declines in absenteeism, injury rates (including work-related injuries and compensation claims), injury-related absences and turnover, as well as improvements in job performance, and productivity.

Providing employees with a convenient way to obtain the necessary exercise is in the financial interest of most businesses. Plus, such programs increase employee satisfaction and help companies to attract and keep the best people.

If your company does not have its own fitness center, we can help through the Healthworks Corporate Fitness Program.
